BNSF-Kansas City Intermodal Facility

The BNSF Intermodal Facility is a 440-acre intermodal facility with a 560-acre logistics park. The BNSF Intermodal Facility provides businesses with a direct connection to the global supply chain via the BNSF’s transcontinental railroad that begins in Long Beach, California, and terminates in Chicago, Illinois. The facility offers companies the ability to quickly and efficiently ship goods by rail and truck to their final destinations. The facility is equipped with wide-span, electric, rail-mounted gantry cranes that produce zero emissions onsite and have significantly reduced the number of hostler trucks needed to move containers within the yard. The intermodal facility features a streamlined automated gate system for trucks as they enter and exit, which uses digital cameras to record images of containers, chassis and tractors. Drivers are also identified using a biometric system. These enhancements have increase security, while improving throughout, reducing truck idling time and emissions by 50 percent.

The electrical scope of work included more than 65,400 lineal feet of red concrete-encased duct bank, more than a half million feet of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) conduit, more than 130 miles of electrical wire, five generators, 23 pad-mounted transformers, two main switchgear sources, 22 S&C sectionalizing equipment cabinets, 65 electric precast manholes, and 318 electric and communication precast hand holes.
